TERMS
GOVERNING USE AND REPRODUCTION NOTE:
BIOGRAPHICAL
AND HISTORICAL NOTE: Little is known
about the author except that her name is Mrs. E.J. Lehman and she is from Philadelphia traveling in the
South. She is obviously well
educated. She is staying with friends in
St. Augustine at the Magnolia Hotel and the Florida House.
Her group of friends includes some children.
She has arthritis and is under the care of a physician, Dr.
Janeway. She then goes to Jacksonville by steamer and Harriet
Beecher Stowe is on board. They then
proceed by railroad to Savannah and then on to Charleston. There is much discussion of history of the
Huguenots and the “Papists,” and visits to all communities are accompanied by a
length discussion of the area churches and local history. The author, included in her diary a number of
newspaper clippings, some dated and some undated from 1878-1880 on the plight
of the Indians who were imprisoned at Castillo de San Marcos and later to their move to
Hampton Institute in Virginia and then to Carlisle, Penn., where there was another
school for Indian children.

SUMMARY
AND SCOPE NOTE: The diary provides
detailed description of life of a tourist in Jacksonville and St. Augustine as well as Charleston and Savannah during the late
1870’s. The description of the Church
services in St. Augustine as well as the plant life
and the joys of the weather make this a most readable diary. There is also description of some of the
tourist spots in each community as well as a summary of the history of the
area. In addition there is a discussion
of the railroads and steamers as well as the hotel in each of the places the
author visited.
ORGANIZATION
NOTE: Chronological beginning in Florida, January
19, 1878 and ending in Philadelphia, on April 14 of the same
year. Newspaper clippings are not
chronological.
